President Joe Biden has stated that the United States will come to Taiwan’s help and has pledged to defend the island that China claims as its own.

When asked if the US would come to Taiwan’s defense during a CNN town hall on Thursday night, Biden answered, “Yes, we have a commitment to do that.” Taiwan has complained of rising military and political pressure from Beijing to embrace Chinese sovereignty.

During an August interview with ABC, Trump made a similar promise, claiming that the US would always support critical friends, including Taiwan, despite the pullout from Afghanistan.

Biden stated at the time that the US made a “vital promise” to defend Nato members in Canada and Europe, as well as Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. The White House later told reporters that the United States’ position toward Taiwan had not shifted.

“We will honor our obligations under the act, continue to support Taiwan’s self-defense, and reject any unilateral alterations to the status quo,” the spokesperson said.

“China, Russia, and the rest of the world know we’re the most powerful military in the history of the planet,” Biden said, adding that people should not be concerned about Washington’s military might. “What you have to be concerned about is whether or not they would engage in activities that will put them in a position to make a significant error,” he added.

Taiwan is Claimed by China as Its Own Territory

China claims Taiwan as its own territory, which it believes should be taken by force if necessary. At the same time, Taiwan asserts that it is a sovereign nation that will protect its freedoms and democracy.

“I don’t want a cold war with China,” Biden declared on Thursday. I simply want China to know that we’re not going backwards, and we’re not going to change our views.”
