EU Prepares for Strict Rules

Charles Michel, President of the European Union (EU) Council, made a statement to the press at the end of the summit held in Brussels.

Charles Michel, President of the European Union (EU) Council, said that the leaders had different views on energy and that a consensus could not be reached at the EU Leaders’ Summit.

Stating that there were long discussions about the increase in energy prices at the summit, Michel said this is a serious and important issue. It directly affects the purchasing power of citizens and the competitiveness of businesses in Europe.

Pointing out that the leaders could not come to a consensus on the energy discussions, Michel said, “We realized that there were different opinions on the table. Therefore, we could not reach an agreement on the energy summit final statement.” He added that the leaders would reconsider the energy issue at the next summit.

Although the energy topic was discussed twice in different sessions during the 14-hour summit, no consensus could be reached.
