Sunak Wins New Round of Leadership Race in England

In the voting for Conservative Party, former Finance Minister Rishi Sunak completed the third round ahead.

After British Prime Minister Boris Johnson resigned as leader of the ruling Conservative Party, former Finance Minister Rishi Sunak received the highest number of votes in the third round of voting among party MPs. Penny Mordaunt, with 115 votes, followed with 82, Liz Kafes with 71, and Kemi Badenoch with 58. The last remaining candidate, Tom Tugendhat, received 31 votes and was eliminated.

The last two candidates in the leadership race are expected to be determined by 21 July. Then, around 160,000 Conservative Party members nationwide will choose the country’s new prime minister and the party’s new leader from among the last two candidates. Former Health Minister Sajid Javid and MP Rehman Chishti announced their withdrawal from the leadership race. Transport Minister Grant Shapps also announced that he was withdrawing from the race and stated that he would support Sunak.
